FRANKLIN KID-1240 Talking Children’s Dictionary Instructions USER KEY GUIDE. ABC - Toggles between writing words in manuscript and cursive script. RHYME - Shows the games menu. GAMES - Shows the games menu. LIST - Lets you use your word list, change settings, or view a demonstration. HELP - Shows help messages. SPEAK - Pronounces words aloud. ON/OFF - Turns the dictionary on or off. ? - Types a ? to stand for a missing letter in a word, or shows confusables. With SHIFT types a * to stand for zero, one or more letters in a word. SHIFT - Shifts the keys to type capital letters. BACK - Erases a letter, backs up to the previous screen or turns off the highlight in definitions. ENTER - Enters words, starts the highlight in definitions or selects items. CLEAR - Clears the most recently entered word screen. UP ARROW - Moves up or makes the screen darker at the “Enter a Word” screen. DOWN ARROW - Moves down or makes the screen lighter at the “Enter a Word” screen. RIGHT ARROW - Moves right or types a space. GETTING STARTED. Before you start, you should install new batteries and adjust the screen contrast. Note : Replace the batteries when the screen contrast is too light even after adjustment. When you remove the batteries the stored information is erased. BATTERY INSTALLATION. Remove the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit. Install 4 x AAA Alkaline batteries into the battery compartment, observing the positive and negative markings to make sure they are inserted in the right way. Replace the battery compartment cover. Press ON/OFF. The first time you turn on this dictionary you are asked to enter your name. Type your name as you want it to appear in this dictionary or press ENTER if you do not want your name to appear. Press (ENTER). Press the UP arrow or DOWN arrow repeatedly to make the screen lighter or darker. (Please note this will only work when “ENTER A WORD” is on the screen). VOLUME CONTROL To adjust the volume, turn the volume control wheel on the right hand side of the dictionary. You can plug headphones into the jack socket on the left side to listen privately. SEEING A DEMONSTRATION. You can see a brief demonstration by first pressing the DOWN arrow until you see “SEE ME WORK”. Press ENTER to see the demonstration. To stop the demonstration, press the CLEAR button. HEARING WORDS. The dictionary can pronounce the words that appear on almost any screen- in definitions, handwriting examples, spelling correction lists, your word list, confusables, games, menus, prompts and even help messages. Just press the SPEAK key whenever you want to hear words. EXAMPLE: Press CLEAR. Type “elephant” and then press SPEAK to hear the word. Press ENTER and then press SPEAK to hear its definition. A tone sounds at the end of the definition. To stop the speech, press BACK. Press ENTER and then use the arrow keys to highlight a word in the definition. Press SPEAK to hear the highlighted word. Press ABC to see the highlighted word written. Press SPEAK to hear the written word. Press clear when you are finished. HEARING THE MENUS. If the sound is turned on, you can press SPEAK to hear the items on the list or games menu. Just press LIST or GAMES and then press SPEAK. TURNING THE KEYBOARD SOUND ON OR OFF. Keyboard sound repeats out loud the letter or name of each key that you press. To turn this on or off, press LIST, press the DOWN arrow until you see KEYBOARD SOUND and then press RIGHT or LEFT arrow. CHANGING THE NAME. You can enter your name or nickname so that it appears when you turn on the dictionary or win a game. To enter or change the name, first press LIST and then press the DOWN arrow until you see “ENTER YOUR NAME”. Press ENTER and use BACK to erase the letters . Type your new name or nickname as you want it to appear and then press ENTER again. HELP IS ALWAYS AT HAND. You can view a help message at almost any screen by pressing HELP. To hear the help message press SPEAK. To turn off the speech press BACK. To go back to where you were, press BACK again. ABOUT AUTOMATIC SHUTOFF. If you forget to turn off the dictionary, it will turn off automatically in approx. 2 minutes. LOOKING UP A WORD. It is easy to look up the definitions of words with your dictionary: Press CLEAR. Type a word. For example, type APPLE. To erase letters, use BACK. To type a space, press RIGHT arrow. To type a capital letter, hold down SHIFT while you type a letter. Press ENTER to see its definition. Press DOWN arrow to read more of the definition. To hear the definition, press SPEAK. To turn off the speech press BACK. To learn more, read “Hearing Words”. Press CLEAR when you are finished. FINDING RHYMES. You can find rhymes with your dictionary. Rhymes are words that sound alike. You can check for words that rhyme with a word you type at the “Enter a Word” screen, a word you looked up, the highlighted word in a definition or list, a game word, or a printed or cursively written word. Press CLEAR. Type “WILD”. Press RYHME. Press the DOWN or UP arrow to scroll through the list of words that rhyme with your word. To hear the definition, press SPEAK. To turn off the speech press BACK. To learn more, read “Hearing Words”. Press CLEAR when you are finished. CORRECTING MISSPELLINGS. If you misspell a word, the dictionary automatically shows you a list of spelling corrections. Example: Press CLEAR. Type a misspelled word, for example “jiraph”. Press ENTER. Press DOWN arrow if necessary, to highlight the correct word. Press SPEAK to hear the word. Press RHYME to see a list of words that rhyme with the word. To highlight another correction, press the DOWN arrow. Press ENTER to see its definition. Press BACK to go back to the corrections. Press CLEAR when you are finished. JUMPING TO A WORD. If you want to learn the meaning of a word that you see in a definition, highlight the word and then jump to its definition. Example: Press CLEAR. Type a word. For example, type “truck”. Press ENTER. Press ENTER again to start the highlight. To turn off the highlight, press BACK. Press the arrow keys to highlight a word. For example, highlight “vehicle”. Press RHYME to see a list of words that rhyme with the word. Press ENTER to jump to the definition of the highlighted word. Press SPEAK to hear the definition. Press BACK to turn off the speech. Press BACK to go back to the word that you typed. Press CLEAR when you are finished. FINDING LETTERS IN WORDS. If you don’t know how to spell a word, type a question mark (?) in place of each letter that you are unsure about. To find prefixes, suffixes, and other parts or words, type an asterisk (*) in a word. Each asterisk stands for a series of letters. You can type more than one question mark or asterisk in a word.. You can also use question marks and asterisk to help you solve crossword puzzles and other word games Example: Press CLEAR. Type a word with (?) or (*) in place of letters. For example, type “p?r*”. To type an asterisk, hold SHIFT and press ?. Press ENTER. Use the DOWN arrow to highlight a word. Press ENTER to see the definition of the highlighted word. Press RHYME to see a list of words that rhyme with the word. Press SPEAK to hear the definition. Press BACK to turn off the speech. Press BACK to go back to the matching words. Press CLEAR when you are finished. VIEWING CONFUSABLES. Confusables are words that are spelled or sound alike that people often confuse. When you see a question mark flashing to the right of a word, that word has confusables. Example: Press CLEAR. Type “Rain” and then press ENTER. Press (?). Each confusable if followed by a word that explains its meaning. Press SPEAK to hear the definition. Press BACK to turn off the speech. Press the DOWN arrow to view more confusables, if there are any. To jump to the definition of a word, highlight it and press ENTER. Press BACK to go back to the confusables. Press clear when you are finished. SAVING WORDS FOR STUDY. You can save as many as 80 words in your own word list for study and review. You can add words to the list that are not found in this dictionary, but they take up more space in your list. Example: To add a word to your list. Press CLEAR. Press LIST. Press UP or DOWN arrow until you see “Add a word” and then press ENTER. Type a word and then press ENTER. If the word is not in this dictionary, press DOWN or UP arrow to see your options and then press ENTER to select one. OR 1) Press CLEAR. 2) Type a word and press LIST. You can also type a word, press ENTER to see the definition and then press LIST. (NOTE : You can also add highlighted words in definitions, spelling correction lists or confusables lists). 3) Press LIST. 4) Press ENTER to add the word. To see and HEAR your words. Press LIST. Press DOWN or UP arrows to highlight a word. Press SPEAK to hear a word, ENTER to see its definition, ABC to see it written, RHYME to see a list of words that rhyme with that word or (?) to see its confusables, if any. TO ERASE A WORD. Press LIST. Press DOWN or UP arrow to see “Erase a word” and then press ENTER. Press DOWN or UP arrow to highlight a word. Press ENTER to erase the highlighted word or press BACK to cancel. TO ERASE YOUR ENTIRE LIST. Press ENTER. Press DOWN or UP arrow to see “Erase List” and then press ENTER. Press Y to erase your list or press N to cancel. CHANGING GAME SETTINGS. Your dictionary has six fun word games. You can choose a skill level (easy or hard) and which game words (all or your list) to use. Press GAMES. To change the skill level, press DOWN or UP arrow to see “Skill Level” and then press LEFT or RIGHT arrow to switch between settings. The check marks your current setting. To change the game words, press DOWN or UP arrow to see “GAME WORDS” and then press LEFT or RIGHT arrow to switch between Settings. UNDERSTANDING THE SKILL LEVELS. The skill levels change the number of guesses in Hangman, the difficulty of the computer opponent in Tic-Tac-Toe, and the number of letters in Jumble, Flashcards, and Guess That Word. Tic-Tac-Toe 2-player is unaffected by the skill level. UNDERSTANDING THE GAME WORDS. If you choose All, the game words will be chosen at random from the dictionary. If you choose “Your List”, the game words will be from the words in your list. Words in your list that have capitals, punctuation, spaces or are too long will not appear in the games. PLAYING THE GAMES. HANGMAN. Press Games if needed. Press DOWN or UP arrow to see “Hangman” and then press ENTER. Type letters you think are in the word. To give up and reveal the word, press (?). To see the definition of the word press ENTER. To go back to the game , press BACK. Press the RIGHT arrow to play a new round. Press SPEAK at any time to hear what is on the screen. JUMBLE. “Jumble” scrambles the letters of a mystery word. You must unscramble all the letters to form the word. NOTE : When you are playing Jumble using your list, only words that are in this dictionary’s word list will appear as game words. Press GAMES, if needed. Press DOWN or UP arrow to see “Jumble” and then press ENTER. To shuffle the letters, press ENTER. Type your guess and then press ENTER. To give up and reveal the word, press (?). To see the definition of the word press ENTER. To go back to the game , press BACK. Press SPEAK at any time to hear what is on the screen. FLASHCARDS “Flashcards” flashes words for you to spell or say. Press GAMES, if needed. Use DOWN or UP arrow to see “Flashcards” and then press ENTER. Press SPEAK to hear the word. Press ENTER to see the definition of the word. To go back to the game, press BACK. Press RIGHT arrow to play a new round. GUESS THE WORD In “Guess That Word”, you must type the missing letters in the mystery word. Press GAMES, if needed. Use DOWN or UP arrow to see “Guess that Word” and then press ENTER. If needed, press LEFT or Right arrow to select a missing letter, and then type the letter that you think belongs there. Continue typing letters until the word is complete or no more tries are left, or press (?) to give up and reveal the word. Press RIGHT arrow to play a new round. TIC-TAC-TOE In “Tic-Tac-Toe”, your challenge is to get three “X’s” in a row before your opponent can get three “0’s” in a row. Press GAMES, if needed. Use DOWN or UP arrow to see “Tic-Tac-Toe” and then press ENTER. Use the arrow keys to move your X to the spot you want and then press ENTER. The computer will then place its O. Continue playing until one side wins or the round ends in a tie. PLAYING TIC-TAC-TOE WITH 2 PLAYERS. Tic-Tac-Toe 2-player is the same as regular Tic-Tac-Toe except that you play with a friend instead of against the computer. One player plays X and the other plays O. SEEING YOUR SCORE Your score appears after each round of most games, until you change games or until you exit the game.
