CHECK-LIST Your Kapten box includes: 1 x Kapten 1 x USB cable 1 x set of headphones with microphone Due to the complexity of the Kapten we have arranged the instructions in chapters and would suggest you read and familiarise yourself with each function and chapter step by step. We have also loaded these instructions as MP3 files on the Kapten MP3 player, which will allow you to access them when ever required. If you would like to go straight to the audio document please use the Quick Start Guide for instructions. You will feel a large circle with a smaller circle inside it at the top end of the unit. There are 5 controls in total in this section, located in the following positions; centre, top (12 o’clock position), bottom (6 o‘clock position), left (9 o‘clock position) and right (3 o‘clock position). These buttons are; Top ?: Play and Pause Right ?: Next Bottom ?: Stop Left ?: Previous Centre: referred to in the text as the K-tag button Below the circle of controls there are four buttons on two rows. The top row of buttons from left to right are: MP3 GPS FM On the second row, below the GPS button is the CALL button. Right Side At the top of the right side you will feel a slightly raised section. This is the volume control. The top section of the button turns the volume up and the lower section turns the volume down. Left Side On the left side of the unit at the bottom you will feel a small hole; this is where the earphones are plugged in. Hold the unit as described above then tilt the top edge towards you. Feel from the left edge to the right; the first switch on the left is the lock. This allows you to lock the unit, to stop accidental button pressing. To lock the unit slide the lock switch to the right, to unlock slide the switch to the left. Continue to the right of the top edge and you will feel a hole, this is for the USB connection Earphone Set MICROPHONE AND MICROPHONE BUTTON: Located along the ear phone cable is an oblong box. This houses the microphone and the microphone button. PLUG TO CONNECT TO KAPTEN: Plug this into the ear phone socket on the Kapten. CHAPTER 2: GENERAL INFORMATION 1. GETTING READY: CHARGING THE KAPTEN Plug the USB lead into the USB socket on your Kapten and then connect the Kapten to a USB port on your computer using the separate USB / micro-USB cable provided (optional mains charger can be purchased as an accessory). As soon as your Kapten is connected to your computer it begins charging. An initial charge time of 4 hours is required before use. When the unit is charging lights will illuminate along the top of the Kapten. When fully charged all 4 symbols will illuminate. After charging always ensure the device is turned off if not about to be used. While the unit is charging you are not able to use the Kapten functions. 2. GENERAL INFORMATION: To turn the Kapten on - press the ?stop key for 3 seconds, you will then hear 'Rise and Shine'. To turn the unit off press and hold the ?Stop key until your hear 'I'm so tired'. If the unit is turned on but not active for around 5 minutes it will automatically switch itself off. At this point you will hear ‘I am so tired’. To awaken the Kapten press and hold down the ?/ Stop button. When you are asked a question by the Kapten always wait for the beep before responding. The battery level is indicated as a percentage. When the unit is at 20% you will hear ‘Battery level low, currently at 20%'. The Kapten will indicate good instructions with a ‘chime’ noise and bad instructions with a flat ‘dong’ noise, i.e. if you give an incorrect instruction or request, the Kapten will make a ‘dong’ noise. If the instruction is good you will hear a ‘chime’ noise or the instruction will be completed. The unit will automatically search for a GPS signal when the Kapten is turned on. You will be informed if the GPS signal is up or down. Please note: if you have turned the GPS receiver off the unit will not search for a signal. 3. RESETTING THE UNIT: If you need to reset the unit because it has frozen, hold down the following 3 buttons; the centre K-tag button, the GPS button and the volume down button. The unit will reset itself and the lights will be illuminated. After approx 90 seconds the unit will turn on and announce a travel warning. 4. WAYS TO RESPOND: There are 3 ways to respond to the Kapten's questions. 1. When the Kapten is announcing a list for your selection you can press the central K-Tag button while your choice is being announced. 2. You can wait for the full list to be announced and speak your choice at the end of the list, after the beep. 3. You can press and release the microphone button at any time while the list is being announced and speak your choice. 5. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS: Read the instructions carefully before using the product. Do not disassemble the product as it may affect the guarantee and damage the product, thereby potentially rendering it unusable. Drive responsibly and respect road safety rules. Always check traffic conditions before following an oral instruction and obey traffic signs and the highway code whatever the mode of transport or navigation. Listening to the music player at full volume for prolonged periods of time could damage your hearing. CHAPTER 3: LIST OF KEYWORDS IN ALL MODES To hear the full General 'List of Keywords' spoken no mode can be activated, as the modes GPS, MP3, FM and Call have their own list of keywords. However, you can announce one of the general keywords whilst in any mode; i.e. In MP3 mode you can press the microphone button and say ‘Battery level’ to hear the battery status. But if you say ‘list of keywords’ the unit will announce the ‘list of keywords for MP3 mode’, not the general list of keywords. GENERAL LIST OF KEYWORDS WITH NO MODE SELECTED 1) Press and release the ‘microphone button’ and wait for the beep. 2) Say “List of Keywords”, you will hear “List of keywords in all modes’, followed by the following list; If you wish to select any of these keywords press the K-tag button on the main unit while it is being spoken. Alternatively, while the list is being spoken, press and release the microphone button, wait for the beep and state the 'keyword' you require i.e. 'battery level'. When you access a keyword, spoken instructions will be given if applicable, such as ‘Do you want to calibrate compass?’, answer with 'yes' or 'no'. Always wait for the beep before responding. LIST OF GENERAL KEYWORDS BATTERY LEVEL: to find out the battery status, this will be announced as a percentage. GPS: activates the GPS navigation function MP3: activates the MP3 function K-TAG: allows you to locate your current position and save it. FM: activates the FM radio function RECORD HOME: allows you to record current location as home. RECORD OFFICE: allows you to record current position as the office. RECORD VEHICLE: allows you to record current position as a parking area. MORE SOUND: increases the sound. LESS SOUND: decreases the sound. WHAT TIME IS IT?: announce the current time. GPS SIGNAL LEVEL: announce the current signal level and number of satellites visible NEW CALL: activates the CALL function (Bluetooth connection required). PLANE MODE ACTIVATION: activates the plane/flight mode, which disables all functions other than the MP3 player and voice recorder. PLANE MODE DEACTIVATION: deactivates the plane/flight mode. COMPASS: Eight Point Compass - North, North-East, East, South-East, South, South-West, West, North-West. SOFTWARE VERSION: announces the current software version. COMPASS CALIBRATION: activates compass calibration mode. AVAILABLE MAPS: announces which maps are available on your Kapten i.e. United Kingdom. MAP ACTIVATION: announces which map is loaded. VOICE RECORDER: allows you to record voice messages. SWITCH OFF KAPTEN: turns the unit off. You will hear “I'm so tired” If you know which keyword you require and you are in one of the 5 modes, you can announce the required keyword, as follows; 1) Press and release the microphone button and wait till your hear the beep. 2) Now announce the required ‘keyword’ from the list and follow the spoken commands, i.e. after the beep say 'Voice recorder'. CHAPTER 4: USING THE GPS MODE LIST OF KEYWORDS IN GPS MODE WHILE NAVIGATING: ‘Where am I?’ - Announces your current position. ‘Speed limit’ - Announces the speed limit for where you are. ‘Where do we go’ - Announces where you are programmed to go to and current mode i.e. motorbike mode etc. ‘Arrival time’ - Announces the time of arrival at programmed destination. ‘Distance’ - Announces the distance between current location and destination. ‘Switch to Pedestrian Mode’ - Switches from current selected mode to Pedestrian mode. ‘Switch to Bicycle Mode’ - Switches from current selected mode to Bicycle mode. ‘Switch to Motorbike Mode’ - Switches from current selected mode to Motorbike mode. ‘Switch to Car Mode’ - Switches from current selected mode to Car mode. ‘Current speed’ - Announces your current speed or the last speed recorded. ‘Next instruction’ - Announces the next GPS instruction. ‘Previous instruction’ - Announces the previous GPS instruction. ‘Avoid Highways’ - Works out the route avoiding highways. ‘Avoid Toll’ - Works out the route avoiding tolls. ‘Take Highways’ - Works out the route taking highways. ‘Take Toll’ - Works out the route taking tolls. ‘Call current destination’ - If the contact details for your arrival destination are stored in your Kapten you can use the call function to call them. If there is no connection to the mobile phone or there is not a contact number stored for your destination the Kapten will tell you. ‘Stop the navigation’ - Stops the current navigation. ‘Current navigation mode’ - Announces which mode of transport is selected; pedestrian, vehicle, bicycle, motorcycle. ‘Activate speed camera’ - Activates the speed camera warning function. ‘Deactivate speed camera’ - Deactivates the speed camera warning function. ‘Current GPS position’ - Announce GPS position in latitude, longitude, altitude. ‘Road Book’ - Announces all the directions for navigation to your required destination. Function only applies when navigation is in progress. The voice commands will be muted when the Road Book is activated and un-muted when the road book has spoken all instructions. To activate any of these keywords press and release the microphone button, wait for the beep and say one of the keywords from the list. Alternatively, if you are not sure of the keywords for GPS mode, press and release the microphone button and say ‘List of Keywords’, the Kapten will then state the contents of the List of Keywords in GPS mode. If you wish to select a keyword prior to the end of the list, press the K-tag button while the choice is being announced or press and release the microphone button and state your choice. Alternatively, state your choice after the full list has been announced and the beep. OTHER FUNCTIONS IN GPS MODE: New address: Navigates to a new address. Favourites: Navigates to a destination stored in your favourites. Last trips: Navigates to a recent destination/trip. The last 10 trips will be stored. Contacts: Navigates to one of your stored contacts addresses (Only available after a connection has been made with your mobile phone). 'K-tags': Navigates to a stored location, which has been tagged. Points of interest: Navigates to one of the following - transportation, public services, leisure and culture, sports activity, useful. Visits: Navigates to a stored visited location which has been downloaded from the Kapsys website. Public transport: Provides directions for travel between main line and underground train stations and trams stops in the following major cities; London, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Glasgow. If you select one of the above functions you will be asked relevant questions to determine where you want to navigate to. For example; if you select 'Last trips', you will be asked which last trip you want to go to, followed by a list of recent trips. Select the required trip by pressing the K-tag button whilst its name is being spoken or announce your selection at the end of the list after the beep. Alternatively, press and release the microphone button whilst the list is being spoken and say the name of the required trip. Navigating to a New Address; For the purpose of these instructions we will be using a location in Norfolk as an example. 1) Turn the unit on by holding down the ?/ Stop button for 3 seconds , the unit will say ‘Rise and Shine’. After the initial message the unit may say 'GPS connection is up/down' OR 'Bluetooth connection attempt in progress'. 2) Press and release the GPS button which will then illuminate or press and release the microphone button, wait for the beep then say ‘GPS’. 3) You will hear a beep followed by ‘Select your navigation mode - pedestrian, bike, motorbike, car’. Announce your choice after the beep or press the K-tag button while it is being spoken. Alternatively press and release the microphone button while the list is being announced, wait for the beep and speak your choice. 4) You will hear ‘Where do you want to go? - New address, favourites, last trips, contacts, K-tags, points of interest, visits, public transport?’ After the beep say ’New Address’ or press the K tag button when you hear your required choice. Alternatively press and release the microphone button and say your choice after the beep. 5) You will here ‘Map of United Kingdom - Enter City name’. After the beep state the name of the city i.e. Norwich. If you do not state a choice the Kapten will automatically start asking if you want to go to different destinations. 6) You will be asked ‘Do you want to go to Norwich in Norfolk’. If the destination the Kapten states is correct, after the beep say ‘Yes’, go to instruction No. 8 below. If an incorrect location is stated, after the beep say ‘No’ and follow instruction 7 below. 7) The unit will ask if you wish to go to various destinations. After each destination announcement and the beep answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’. If none of the announced places are correct the unit will say ‘Recognition failed, do you know County name’, answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’. If ‘Yes’ you will be asked ‘Enter County name’; say the county name i.e. Norfolk. You will hear ‘Do you want to go to Norfolk’, answer ‘Yes’. Alternatively, the unit will announce a list of county's; answer either ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Once you have responded with ‘Yes’ the unit will continue with the next destination question. 8) You will hear ‘Enter Street name’. After the beep say the street name. i.e. Prince of Wales Road and go to instruction 9 below or, if you do not require a specific street/road name, press the next button ?. This will tell the Kapten you wish to be taken to the selected City centre, but not a specific street/road. The unit will then state 'Itinerary calculation in progress. Please wait. Starting navigation Norwich, City Centre'. 9) If you asked for a street you will hear ‘Do you want to go to Prince of Wales Road’. If this is correct say ‘Yes’ and go to instruction 11 below. If the incorrect location is stated, after the beep say ‘No’ and follow instructions 10 below. 10) The unit will ask if you wish to go to various destinations. After each destination announcement and the beep answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’. If none of the announced places are correct the unit will say ‘Enter Street name’. After the beep re-state the street name. i.e. Prince of Wales Road. This method will continue until your location is found. 11) You will hear ‘Enter street number’. After the beep; say the street/house number required. Please note: If you do not require a specific street/house number press the next button ?. This will tell the Kapten you wish to be taken to the street but not a specific house number on the street. 12) While the itinerary route is being calculated, the Kapten will say 'In order to indicate the right direction point your Kapten in front of you and press K-tag button or use any button to pass this step'. (Any button means any of the controls around the K-tag button). Point the Kapten in the direction you are facing and press the K-tag button. This will allow the unit to determine the direction in which you are facing. Please note: if you press any of the circular controls other than the K-tag button, the unit will not know which direction you are facing. This may result in initially incorrect directions, which will be corrected once you begin moving. 13) Once all the information is added, you will hear ‘Itinerary navigation in progress, starting navigation to Norwich, Prince of Wales Road’. You will then be informed of the journey length, time and other relevant information, followed by the first navigational instruction. If you do not have GPS coverage you will also be informed. 14) In GPS navigation mode you can use the previous ?control to re-hear the current navigational instruction or the next ?control to obtain instructions from your current position to the next point in your route. You can also press and release the microphone button and say 'Previous instruction' or 'Next instruction'. 15) To mute the spoken instructions, press the play/pause button, you will hear ‘Voice indications are muted’. To reinstate them, press the button again, you will hear ‘Voice indications are un-muted’. 16) To stop the navigation; press the stop?button, alternatively press and release the microphone button and say after the beep 'Stop the navigation'. You will be asked ‘Do you want to stop the navigation?’; if you say ‘Yes’ after the beep the unit will exit the GPS mode. If you do not wish to stop the navigation say ‘No’. Whilst in GPS navigation mode, you can use the MP3, FM radio or Call functions. Please note: while in another mode the Kapten buttons and list of keywords will relate to the new mode you are in and not the GPS mode. Turning the GPS reception on or off; The Kapten will automatically search for GPS satellites and advise you whether the GPS signal level is up or down i.e. satellite signals being received or not. If you wish to stop the Kapten searching for the satellites you can turn the function off, as follows; 1) When the unit is turned on, press and hold the GPS button. You will hear 'GPS is off'. 2) To reinstate the function repeat the process, you will hear 'GPS is on'. If the GPS reception is turned off, you will not be able to receive the relevant information about the GPS signal level, using the keywords. If you press the microphone button and say 'GPS signal level' while the GPS reception is off, you will hear 'GPS is not started'. However, if the GPS reception is turned off but you quick press the GPS button to begin a navigation; the GPS reception will automatically turn on. K- TAG A LOCATION With your Kapten you can geotag (geographically tag) a place with a K-tag using the central button (K-tag). You can then voice tag the destination for easy identification in the future. You are able to access the K-tag function in all modes as long as you have GPS coverage and you are not currently making selections as the K-tag button is then used as the OK button. i.e. choosing what to listen to or where to go. 1) Press the K -tag button OR press and release the microphone button and say K-tag. Important - The GPS signal must be active for the K-tag to be accepted. 2) You will hear ‘Do you want to record a K-tag'? 3) After the beep say ‘Yes’. 4) You will be asked ‘Enter K-tag voice memo after the tone or press stop button to cancel’. If you press stop, you will hear K-tag recorded without voice memo’. This means the unit will store your destination without a voice memo. 5) Enter the name or K-tag you wish to use, i.e. name of destination, information about the destination. The voice memo can last up to 10 seconds. You will hear a beep once the space for the voice tag is full. 6) If you press stop, you will hear ‘K-tag recorded without voice memo’. This means the unit will store your destination without a voice memo. 7) You will then hear the registration number for the new K-tag. Once a K-tag has been created you can immediately access the destination through the GPS navigation. You can also upload your K-tags to the Kapmanager site to share with other members. To delete a K-tag you will need to access your K-tags in your Kapmanager program. Chapter 5: COMPASS COMPASS CALIBRATION The Compass is an eight point compass; North, North-East, East, South-East, South, South-West, West and North-West. Prior to using the compass it will need to be calibrated. 1) Turn the unit on by holding down the ?/ Stop button for 3 seconds, the unit will say ‘Rise and Shine’. After the initial message the unit may say 'GPS connection is up/down' OR 'Bluetooth connection attempt in progress'. 2) Press and release the microphone button and say ‘Compass Calibration'. 3) You will hear ‘Do you want to calibrate compass now?'. After the beep respond ‘Yes’ or press the K-tag control to accept. Note: If there is a problem during any of the calibration procedures you will be informed with the following statement ‘Calibration failed’. You will then need to begin again from instruction 2. 4) You will hear ‘Accelerometer calibration, keep your Kapten flat in front of you till the beep’. Lay the Kapten flat on a table and wait for the beep. 5) You will hear ‘Accelerometer calibration done’. 6) You will hear ‘Vertical axis calibration, move your Kapten in front of you from top to bottom, till the beep’. Hold the earphone connection in your left hand and the Kapten in the other. Now twist the Kapten briskly forwards and backwards. 7) You will hear ‘Calibration vertical axis done’. 8) You will hear ‘Horizontal axis calibration, move your Kapten in front of you from left to right until the beep’. Holding the Kapten flat in front of you and keeping it flat, move the unit briskly from left to right. 9) You will hear ‘Calibration horizontal axis done’. 10) You will hear ‘Roll axis calibration, turn your Kapten on it’s sides till the beep’. Holding the Kapten flat in front of you, twist the unit from side to side. 11) You will hear ‘Calibration roll axis done’, followed by ‘Turn your compass to the selected direction’. The direction you are facing will be announced once the calculation has been made. COMPASS The compass will tell you in which direction you are pointing the Kapten. Please note: each time you change direction you will need to ask the Kapten the position again. This will not be announced automatically when the direction is changed. The compass can be accessed whilst in any mode. 1) Turn the unit on by holding down the ?/ Stop button for 3 seconds, the unit will say ‘Rise and Shine’. After the initial message the unit may say 'GPS connection is up/down' OR 'Bluetooth connection attempt in progress'. 2) Press and release the microphone button and say ‘Compass'. Alternatively, you can select this function through the list of keywords. 3) You will hear ‘You are facing ......(North, North-East, East, South-East, South, South-West, West, North-West)’. The unit will automatically exit the Compass mode. CHAPTER 6: VOICE RECORDER The memory space for the Voice recorder will depend upon the amount of music stored on your Kapten. You can record individual memos which are referred to as voice memos. Within this function you can record, playback and delete your voice recordings. The voice recorder is a general Keyword function therefore the following can be accessed while in any mode i.e. GPS, MP3, FM. The Voice Recorder function has 3 items in the menu; a) Record a voice memo b) Play a recorded voice memo c) Delete a recorded voice memo Recording a voice memo; If you are using the voice recorder when the unit is already turned on go to instruction 2 below; 1) Turn the unit on by holding down the ?/ Stop button for 3 seconds , the unit will say ‘Rise and Shine’. After the initial message the unit may say 'GPS connection is up/down' OR 'Bluetooth connection attempt in progress'. 2) Press and release the microphone button and say 'Voice recorder'. 3) You will hear 'Voice recorder mode; Do you want to record a new voice memo?'. 4) After the beep say 'Yes' or press the K-tag button, you will hear 'Recording will start after the beep. You can record approximately ...hours ...minutes. Pressing stop will end the recording'. 5) If you say 'No' after the beep, the voice recorder will proceed to the next item in the list, which is play back of recorded voice memos. 6) After the beep speak your memo into the microphone. Once you are finished press and release the ?/ Stop button or the microphone button. You will hear 'Recording complete'. 7) The unit will exit the voice recorder function. Playing back voice memo; If you are using the voice recorder when the unit is already turned on go to instruction 2 below; 1) Turn the unit on by holding down the ?/ Stop button for 3 seconds , the unit will say ‘Rise and Shine’. After the initial message the unit may say 'GPS connection is up/down' OR 'Bluetooth connection attempt in progress'. 2) Press and release the microphone button and say 'Voice recorder'. 3) You will hear 'Voice recorder mode; Do you want to record a new voice memo?'. 4) After the beep say 'No' or press the ?next button to go to the next function, you will hear 'Do you want to play a voice memo?'. 5) After the beep say 'Yes' or press the K-tag button. You will hear 'Select a voice memo to play'. 6) If you say 'No' after the beep, the voice recorder will proceed to the next item in the list, which is the deleting of recorded voice memo. 7) If there are no memos stored the unit will say 'No voice memos available'. 8) The unit will then begin playing each memo stored but, if you know the memo number you require, press and release the microphone button and say 'Recorded voice memo' (followed by the number). If you are not sure of the voice memo number the unit will play all the memos stored. If you hear the memo required press the K-tag button. The unit will then play the memo again. You can also use the ? next or ?previous buttons to scroll through the stored tracks. 9) If no memo is selected the Kapten will say 'Recognition failed, select recorded voice memo to play' and start again at instruction 8. 10) The unit will then exit the voice recorder menu. Please note: when you individually select a memo to play, you will only able to play the selected memo. If you wish to play another memo you will need to re-activate the voice recorder menu from the beginning. Deleting recorded voice memo; If you are using the voice recorder when the unit is already turned on go to instruction 2 below; 1) Turn the unit on by holding down the ?/ Stop button for 3 seconds, the unit will say ‘Rise and Shine’. After the initial message the unit may say 'GPS connection is up/down' OR 'Bluetooth connection attempt in progress'. 2) Press and release the microphone button and say 'Voice recorder'. 3) You will hear 'Voice recorder mode; Do you want to record a new voice memo?'. 4) After the beep say 'No' or press the ?next button to go to the next function, you will hear 'Do you want to play a recorded voice memo?'. 5) After the beep say 'No' or press the ?next button to go to the next function. You will then hear 'Do you want to delete a recorded voice memo?'. 6) After the beep say 'Yes' or press the K-tag button. You will hear 'Select recorded voice memo to delete'. If you say 'No' after the beep, the voice recorder will exit the menu. 7) The unit will then begin playing each memo stored, but if you know the memo number you require, press the microphone button and say 'Recorded voice memo' (followed by the number). If you are not sure of the memo number, the unit will play all the memos stored. When you hear the memo required press the K-tag button. You will then be asked 'Do you really want to delete this voice memo? Say ‘Yes’ or press the K-tag button to confirm OR say 'No' or press the ? Stop button to cancel. You can also use the ? next or ?previous buttons to scroll through the stored memos. 8) If no memo is selected the Kapten will say 'Recognition failed, select recorded voice memo to delete' and start again from instruction 6. 9) You will then hear 'The voice memo has been deleted'. 10) The unit will then exit the voice recorder menu. Please note: if you select an individual memo to delete, you will only able to delete that memo. If you wish to delete another memo you will need to re-activate the voice recorder menu from the beginning. If there are no voice memo stored; If you enter voice recorder mode and try to play or delete a memo, but there are no memos stored, you will hear; 'No voice memo available', the unit will return to the beginning of the Voice recorder mode; 'Voice recorder mode, do you want to record a new voice memo?'. To exit the Voice recorder press the ?/ Stop button. Note: that the voice memo numbers stay attached to their memo, even if some are deleted. Also, if memos are deleted, their numbers are not re-used when you record new ones. CHAPTER 7: USING THE MP3 PLAYER Whilst in MP3 mode you can complete a number of activities using the Keywords list for MP3. LIST OF KEYWORDS IN MP3 MODE WHILE LISTENING TO MUSIC: ‘What am I listening to?’ - tells you the song and artist currently playing. ‘Play whole album’ - Plays the entire selected album. ‘Same genre music’ - Plays music with the same genre. ‘More of this artist’ - Plays all music by the selected artist. ‘Stop the music’ - Stops the MP3 playing and exits the MP3 mode. ‘Random’ - Plays the music in a random order. ‘Deactivate random’ - Stops the random mode. ‘Play all the music’ - Plays all the music stored in the memory. ‘Next song’ - Plays the next song by your selected artist or album. ‘Previous song’ - Plays the previous song by your selected artist or album. To activate any of these keywords press and release the microphone button, wait for the beep and say one of the keywords from the list. Alternatively, if you are not sure of the keywords, press and release the microphone button and say ‘List of Keywords’, the Kapten will then state the contents of the list. If you wish to select a keyword prior to the end of the list, press the K-tag button or press and release the microphone button and state your choice. Alternatively, state your choice after the full list has been announced and you hear the beep. Note: You can use the MP3 mode whilst using the GPS navigation. The MP3 volume will be reduced when the unit is announcing a GPS command. 1) Turn the unit on by holding down the ?/ Stop button for 3 seconds , the unit will say ‘Rise and Shine’. After the initial message the unit may say 'GPS connection is up/down' OR 'Bluetooth connection attempt in progress'. 2) Press the MP3 button which will then illuminate. Or press and release the microphone button, wait for the beep then say ‘MP3’. You will hear ‘Choose your listening mode; album, artist, genre, play list, pod cast'. Announce your choice after the beep, or press the K-tag button to select your choice while it is being spoken. 3) Follow the spoken commands and selections. Once you have made your selection, your choice will be played. 4) To change the volume of the music, either use the volume buttons on the side of the unit or quick press the microphone button, wait for the beep and then state either ‘more sound’ or ‘less sound’. 5) If you wish to change you original selection of listening mode, press the MP3 button again; you will hear ‘Choose your listening mode’ continue as per instruction number 2. 6) If you are listening to an album you can go through the album songs by using the keywords 'Next song' or 'Last song' or by using the next button? or the previous button ?. If you wish to go back to the beginning of the current song, press the previous button once ?, if you wish to go to the previous song press this button twice. If you wish to go to the next song press the next button ?. Please note: when you select album or artist the Kapten will play the songs for your selection. It will play all songs and repeat them until you make another selection or press a button. 7) If you wish to pause the MP3 player press the pause button ?. When you wish to continue the music, press the pause button again. To change the volume, either use the volume buttons on the side of the unit or quick press the microphone button, wait for the beep and then state either ‘more sound’ or ‘less sound’. Note: when you are in ‘Play all the music’ mode you can use the ‘Next song’ and ‘Previous song’ buttons and commands to scroll through all the music stored on the MP3 player. You can use the MP3 function whilst in GPS and CALL modes. The navigation instructions of the GPS will continue while the MP3 player is on and the volume of the MP3 player will lower when an instruction or call is spoken. To exit the MP3 mode either press the ?/ Stop button or use the keyword ‘Stop the music’. UPLOADING MUSIC You will need to install Kapmanager on your computer to upload music to your Kapten. After installation, select the music page. The program will search for music files on your computer and load them into the Kapmanager music page. You can select, drag and drop the required music to the image of the Kapten on the Kapmanager page. The software will automatically convert the music file to a MP3 file when it loads it into your Kapten. CHAPTER 8: USING THE FM RADIO Whilst in FM mode you can complete a number of activities using the Keywords list for FM. LIST OF KEYWORDS IN FM MODE WHILE LISTENING TO THE RADIO: ‘New Station’ - Allows you to state name of the station you wish to listen to. ‘Stop the Radio’ - Stops the radio playing and exits FM mode. ‘New Frequency’ - Allows you to select the frequency you wish to listen to. ‘What Am I Listening To?’ - Announces the name of the current station playing. To activate any of these keywords press and release the microphone button, wait for the beep and say one of the keywords from the list. Alternatively, if you are not sure of the keywords, press and release the microphone button and say ‘List of Keywords’, the Kapten will then state the contents of the list. If you wish to select a keyword press the K-tag button while it is being spoken or press and release the microphone button and state your choice. Alternatively, state your choice after the full list has been announced and you hear the beep. Note: You can use the radio mode whilst using the GPS navigation. The radio volume will be reduced when the unit is announcing a GPS command. 1) Turn the unit on by holding down the ?/ Stop button for 3 seconds , the unit will say ‘Rise and Shine’. After the initial message the unit may say 'GPS connection is up/down' OR 'Bluetooth connection attempt in progress'. 2) Press the FM button which will then illuminate or press the microphone button, wait for the beep then say ‘FM’. 3) If there was a station you were listening to previously it will play automatically, if it is available. 4) You can either continue to listen to the station playing or select another station, using one of the following methods. Press and release the microphone button and say ‘New station’. You will then hear ‘Dictate the name of the station you wish to hear’. Wait for the beep and say the name of the station i.e. Heart FM or BBC Radio 1. If you do not reply with a station name after the request the Kapten will speak the names of the available stations. At the end of the list wait for the beep and say the name of a station you require. Alternatively, if you are not sure of the name or frequency, press the FM button , this will also activate the list of stations available. Press the microphone button and say ‘New frequency’. You will then hear ‘Enter frequency’. After the beep, state the frequency of the station i.e. 102.4 - said as "one hundred and two point four". If you are told ‘you need GPS coverage’ you may not be able to locate the station required at this time, please try again with GPS satellites located. Manually search for a station by using the previous button ?to go backwards and next button ? to go forward. Press the required button once to step backwards or forwards in 100 Khz steps. If you wish to find the next or previous station available hold the relevant button down until you hear a pause, at which point release the button. The Kapten will then announce the name of the station found. 5) If you wish to mute the FM radio press the pause button ?. When you wish to continue listening press the pause button again. 6) To exit the FM mode either quick press the ?/ Stop button or use the keyword ‘Stop the radio’. To change the volume of the radio, either use the volume buttons on the side of the unit or use the ‘more sound’ or ‘less sound’ keywords. You can use the FM radio function whilst in GPS and CALL modes. The navigation instructions of the GPS will continue while the FM radio is on and the volume of the FM radio will lower when an instruction or call is spoken. CHAPTER 9: TELEPHONING WITH THE CALL FUNCTION Your Kapten is equipped with a Bluetooth interface which allows you to connect the unit to your mobile phone (a compatible mobile phone). This allows you to make and receive calls using your Kapten. To view a list of compatible mobile phones please visit www.kapsys.com/ on the support category. Alternatively, please contact Cobolt Systems for further advice. Prior to using the Kapten telephone function you will need to pair your Kapten to your mobile phone. Once pairing has been established and secured using a PIN (4 digits), the two devices will communicate together and the process will not require running again, unless you wish to pair/synchronize to a different mobile phone. You can use the CALL function whilst in all other modes; GPS, FM and CALL functions. The navigation instructions of the GPS will continue while a CALL is in progress and the MP3 will pause and FM radio volume will lower or switch off. Once the call is disconnected the MP3 player will continue from where it was paused and the volume of the FM radio will increase. TO PAIR KAPTEN TO YOUR MOBILE PHONE: 1) Turn the unit on. 2) Press the CALL button, you will then hear 'No registered mobile phone, you have to establish connection from your mobile phone first'. 3) As you would usually use your mobile phones Bluetooth, carry out a search for other devices using Bluetooth. (See your mobile phone instructions). 4) Once the search is complete and successful; select 'Kapten' from the list. 5) At this point a PIN code will be requested, enter 0000 (4 zeros). 6) If the paring is not successful, activate the hands-free kit connection on your mobile phone. Note: this procedure is carried out automatically by some models of mobile phone. For instructions on activating your hands-free kit see your mobile phone instructions. 7) When you have established the connection, press the “CALL” button on Kapten once again. The device will say ‘Bluetooth connection attempt in progress’ OR if your telephone is compatible, the device asks you whether you wish to import your contacts. Note: not all phones will ask if you wish to import your contacts. Depending on your phone model your contacts may automatically be imported into the Kapten when Bluetooth is connected and paired. 8) After the beep say 'Yes', Kapten will begin to import your contacts. Once the import process is complete you will hear, "Download complete". 9) If your Kapten does not ask if you wish to import your contact list, with certain telephones it is also possible to transmit telephone contacts directly to Kapten from your list of contacts, by using the send contacts function via Bluetooth (for further details, please see the instructions to your telephone). Once your contacts have been imported by the Kapten you can call them by pressing the Kapten's “CALL” button and stating the name of the contact you wish to call (see instructions further on). ACTIVATING AND DEACTIVING BLUETOOTH: In certain circumstances you may need to deactivate your Bluetooth connection. 1) Press and hold the CALL button for a minimum of 3 seconds or until you hear a 'dong' noise followed by 'Bluetooth is off'. The indication light on the CALL button will go off. 2) To activate the Bluetooth, follow instruction 1, but this time you will hear 'Bluetooth is on' and the CALL button indication light will flash. When travelling by aircraft you are required to turn off certain electronic devices. Therefore it is very important to ensure the above deactivation procedure is carried out prior to take off. PLANE MODE ACTIVATION: activates the plane/flight mode, which disables all functions other than the MP3 player and voice recorder. PLANE MODE DEACTIVATION: deactivates the plane/flight mode. MAKING A TELEPHONE CALL USING KAPTEN: Prior to attempting to make a call through your Kapten, you need to check the following; Bluetooth connection has been made with your mobile phone as above. Bluetooth is turned on. 1) Turn the unit on by holding down the ?/ Stop button, the unit will say ‘Rise and Shine’. You may hear another statement after the initial turning on message. 2) Press the CALL button which will then illuminate. Alternatively, use the 'New Call' keyword. 3) If Bluetooth connection is activated, the Kapten will say 'Dictate contact name'. Say the required surname i.e. Smith. 4) If there is no Bluetooth connection you will be informed. Ensure the Bluetooth is activated/on and there is a connection between your phone and the Kapten. 5) The Kapten will announce an initial contact selection. 6) If the choice is correct say 'Yes' or press the K-tag button. 7) If the choice is incorrect say 'No' or press the next button ?, continue this procedure until the correct choice is spoken, at which point say 'Yes' or press the K-tag button. 8) The Kapten will then dial the relevant number. Note: If there is more than one number associated with your chosen contact's name, the Kapten will announce the different available numbers. If this is the case you will hear 'Do you want to call [contact]’; answer ’Yes’ or ’No’ until the correct contact is spoken. You will then hear ‘Select number [home number, cell number, office number]?'. After the beep state your choice. 9) When your contact answers the call you continue to use your Kapten headset (microphone and head-phones/speaker) as usual. 10) To hang up once your call is finished, briefly press the ?stop button or hold down the microphone button. Note: While a call is active if you wish to mute the call, briefly press the microphone button. To un-mute the call re-press the microphone button. 11) To stop the dialling in progress, i.e. if your call is not answered, briefly press the ?stop button or hold down the microphone button. ANSWERING OR REJECTING AN INCOMING CALL: When there is an incoming call, your Kapten will announce the name of your contact, if it is featured in your contact list. If the contact is not listed the Kapten will say 'the number 0********** is calling'. If the number is withheld or not available you will hear 'you have an incoming call'. The GPS instructions or MP3/FM radio volume will lower. 1) Answer the call in either of the following ways; Briefly press the CALL button OR Briefly press the microphone button. 2) Muting a call; If you wish to mute a call while it is in progress, briefly press the microphone button. To exit mute mode, briefly press the microphone button. 3) Ending the call when your conversation is finished; Briefly pressing the ? stop button OR Press and hold the microphone button. 4) Rejecting an incoming call after the caller details have been announced; Briefly pressing the ? stop button OR Press and hold the microphone button. To exit the CALL mode press the ?/ Stop button. The unit will store the first connection to a mobile phone contact list when requested. The first uploaded contacts will remain in the unit even if a connection to a second mobile phone is made. If there are contacts with the same name the original mobile phone contact will overwrite the second mobile phone contact. To remove the stored contacts you will need to reset the configuration in the Kapmanager program. To change the setting click ‘Auto loading at next connection’ in the configure button on the program. This will allow a full new contact list, after mobile phone pairing to be made. When you next pair a mobile phone with the Kapten, if you do not require the contact list to be imported, state ‘No’ when asked. If you do not remove the original contacts from the Kapten but pair a second mobile phone with the unit, it will call the original contacts using the new mobile phone connection. CHAPTER 10: INSTALLING KAPMANAGER The Kapmanager is an application and website which you can sign up to for updating, sharing location information, downloading and much more. The Kapmanager application software is stored in the Kapten and will be installed when you connect your Kapten to your computer as an extra device. FEATURES OF KAPMANAGER Keep your Kapten up to date with the latest satellite information. Update your Kapten's software as upgrades occur. Update speed camera locations. Update local radio station names. Load European city maps. Share your favourite places with friends. Scan the musical contents of your computer and easily import and upload your music to your Kapten. Check free and used storage space on your Kapten. Subscribe to pod casts and download them directly to your Kapten. Synchronise your Kapten with your personal myKapsys space. As well as being able to download maps of major cities which are not included in the UK version of the Kapten, you are also able to download Tour Guides with these maps, which will lead you round the relevant city giving you spoken information and history of the points of interest. CONNECTING YOUR KAPTEN TO YOUR COMPUTER: Plug the USB cable supplied with your Kapten, into the USB connector on the top of the Kapten. Then plug the other end into your USB port on your computer. Once the unit is plugged in the system will automatically connect and show on your computer as an extra device. INSTALLING KAPMANAGER ON A PC (WINDOWS XP & VISTA) When you connect your Kapten to your computer’s USB port you will see, depending on the configuration of your system: -either a Windows action window: in which case choose “kapmanager” from the content selection window (and click on “ok”) -or, go to “My Computer” and double-click on the peripheral device representing Kapten to begin the kapmanager installation process. Then follow the steps to install kapmanager INSTALLING KAPMANAGER FOR MAC (MAC OS 10.4 OR SUBSEQUENT) When you connect Kapten via USB to your Mac, a “Kapten” icon appears on your desktop. ? Double-click on the icon to explore the logical content of your Kapten. Find the file “kapmanager-installer.dmg” and double-click on it. Once you have accepted the licence contract, an installation window appears. Then drag and drop “kapmanager” to the Applications folder to start the installation. When you have gone through all the installation steps, the kapmanager installation becomes available in the “Applications” folder. LAUNCHING KAPMANAGER AND REGISTRATION OF MYKAPSYS Launch kapmanager by double-clicking on the corresponding icon. To register yourself on the 'myKapsys' space, click on the ‘myKapsys' tab in the kapmanager tab bar and fill in the on-line subscription form. When your form has been validated, enter the password chosen on subscription to gain access to the ‘myKapsys’ space and initiate “synchronisation”. Each time you launch kapmanager and enter your password, you can directly access your 'myKapsys' on-line space via the 'myKapsys' tab in kapmanager. DISCONNECTING KAPTEN FROM THE COMPUTER Before disconnecting Kapten from your computer, click on the “eject” button from the Kapten tab in kapmanager and wait for the confirmation message before physically disconnecting the device. UPDATING YOUR KAPTEN It is recommended you update your Kapten once a week to download the latest information for the GPS satellites that geo-locate your position. This will allow the unit to pick up the signals faster. To update, connect the Kapten to computer using the USB cable. The computer will either automatically open your Kapmanager program or you will need to open it as per other programs. Once connected to your Kapmanager the unit will automatically be updated if an update is available. Your computer will show if an update has been performed. UPLOADING MUSIC You will need to install Kapmanager on your computer to upload music to your Kapten. When you install the program, select the music page. The program will search for music files on your computer and load them into the Kapmanager music page. From here you can select, drag and drop the required song to the image of the Kapten on the Kapmanager page. The software will automatically convert the music file to a MP3 file. CHAPTER 11: KAPLET The Kapten is completely vocally operated however, if you should need to view the function on a screen, you can do so using Kaplet. Kaplet is a Java application which can be downloaded to a mobile phone. Kaplet allows you to use the screen and buttons on your mobile phone for: accessing all Kapten’s menus. displaying navigation instructions to back up the spoken instructions. displaying a map featuring your current position. To find out if your mobile is compatible with the Kaplet, please visit the support pages of the Kapten site www.kapsys.com INSTALLING / DOWNLOADING KAPLET TO YOUR MOBILE PHONE: 1) To install Kaplet, connect your Kapten to mykapsys through kapmanager. You will need to be registered on the myKapsys site, which you can do at this point if you are not already registered. 2) In the 'my updates' > Kaplet section, select your mobile phone model and validate. 3) The selected Kaplet is then automatically downloaded in your Kapten (through the synchronization process). ONCE KAPLET IS DOWNLOADED: 1) Unplug your Kapten (for a safe unplug in kapmanager click on the "eject" button in the Kapten tab) 2) Do a Bluetooth pairing between your Kapten and your mobile phone as described in the Call section above. 3) Once a pairing has been made, press on the CALL button of the Kapten to start installing the Kaplet on your mobile. ALTERNATIVE DOWNLOAD METHOD: Go to the "downloads" section of the online Support and download on your computer the archive holding all the available Kaplets. From this archive, extract the desired .jar file (based on your mobile phone type) and install it on your mobile phone (see your phone user manual for info on how to install a java application).
