Cobolt Speechmaster Audible Spirit Level Your Spirit Level should be held with its flat surface away from you and the curved end to the left. The rear flat surface is a ruler which pivots at its left end and which can be locked in position by a large button on the front face of the unit at the left end. There are two small windows by this locking button which display the angle the ruler has been set to. To the right of the locking button is a spirit level mounted vertically. On the top front edge of the case you can feel three bumps. These are LED lamps which display when the device is level. Behind the LEDs is a three position switch. Left is off, centre is LEDs on, right is LEDs and sound on. To the right of the switch is a recess containing a spirit level mounted horizontally. The lower edge of the case is ribbed and shaped like an inverted 'V' to enable the device to be used on round or radiused surfaces such as pipes. BATTERY The level uses a standard PP3 9v battery. The battery compartment is in the right hand end of the case. The cover slides down to expose the connector. Fit this to the battery in the normal way then slide the battery base first into the compartment with the wires running along the top of the battery. Take care not to trap the wires and ensure that they are inside the compartment before replacing the cover. OPERATION The LED indicators and audible tones only function if the device is used with the flat face vertical and the 'V' edge at the bottom as described above. With the switch in the centre or right positions the left hand red LED will indicate that the left end is high, the green centre LED indicates level and the right hand red LED indicates right end high. With the switch to the right the unit will sound two tones. The higher one indicates the left end is high, the lower one indicates the right end is high and no tone indicates that the unit is level. It is possible to check for a vertical surface by setting the ruler to 90 deg either by using the windows or opening the ruler into a corner or against a known 90 deg edge. If the device is now held against a wall and adjusted until it indicates level the ruler will be vertical.
