Below the headphone socket on the left side is a slide switch. This is the ON/OFF switch for the radio, push the switch up for ON and down for OFF. On the top surface of the pedometer are two buttons. The left of these is the SCAN button for the radio, used to select stations. The right one is the RESET button which will reset the radio once it has scanned for stations to the end of the band width. On the front surface of the pedometer is a display screen and under this are three small protruding buttons. The left of these is the UP/AUTO button. The centre button is the MODE button and the one on the right is the DOWN/CLEAR button. USING THE PEDOMETER: The first thing to do is set the step length and body weight into the unit. The step length is the distance of one normal stride, either toe to toe or heel to heel. The average step length is 22”. To enter this into the unit press the MODE button and hold it down until you hear “enter your step length” - press the UP/DOWN buttons to enter the length - this is only shown on the display and not spoken. Press MODE again until you hear “enter your weight”. Press the UP/DOWN buttons to enter your weight - between 40lb and 300lb - again this is only displayed and not spoken. Press MODE once more to return to the normal display. To hear the announcement of number of calories burned, distance walked etc. make sure the radio ON/OFF button is in the OFF position. Pressing the TALK button will always announce the display on the screen. To make the unit announce the appropriate message, press the MODE button until you hear the section required - eg. With it selected “ON” these functions will automatically be announced at the intervals displayed in the following table: FUNCTION VOICE ANNOUNCEMENT Number of steps Every 1000 steps Distance Every 0.5 miles Calories Every 50 calories (1 calorie = 1 Kcal) Time Every 10 minutes At any time if the TALK button is held down all the above functions will be announced. Press and hold the DOWN/CLEAR button until “ALL CLEAR” is spoken to return all the settings to zero. The pedometer should be clipped to a belt or waistband in the vertical position or incorrect readings may occur. LISTENING TO THE RADIO: Connect the earphones to the socket in the left side of the unit. Slide the switch under the socket to the ON position and the LED in the centre top of the unit will light up. Press the SCAN button to select the radio station required. Pressing RESET will return the radio to the starting frequency. To adjust the volume of the radio rotate the switch located on the earphone cable. PLEASE NOTE: WHEN THE RADIO IS SWITCHED ON THE TALKING FUNCTION OF THE PEDOMETER IS DISABLED. CHANGING THE BATTERIES: The battery compartment is located on the back of the unit. Slacken the small Philips screw at the bottom of the cover - it will not come completely out - and hinge the cover upwards until it releases from the case. The 2 AAA size alkaline batteries should be fitted with their negative (flat) ends towards the spring contacts. If the unit shows an abnormal function such as a frozen display, it may need to be RESET by inserting a paperclip into a small hole just to the left of the battery compartment screw. This may need help from a sighted person as the hole is rather small and difficult to locate.
