Cobolt Speechmaster Dialtalk Instructions GENERAL Your DIALTALK has been designed to operate with any telephone connected to a tone (DTMF) type exchange, even if the telephone itself is an old style pulse dialling type. If you are unsure which type of exchange you are connected to please call `150' - B.T. enquiries, who will be able to advise you. Most U.K. exchanges are now tone operated and your DIALTALK will not cause any damage if you attempt to use it on the wrong type of exchange. BATTERY The DIALTALK uses a single PP3 9v battery - we recommend an alkaline type for maximum life. The battery cover is on the rear of the case with a finger-nail recess on the top edge. Please note that when changing the battery the cover should be removed. You should then wait at least 15 seconds after pressing any keys before disconnecting the old battery. Any numbers in memories will be remembered for 2 minutes with no battery connected to give sufficient time to fit a fresh battery. If you have pressed a key within 15 seconds, or take too long to fit the new battery, the DIALTALK will warn you that the memorised numbers have been lost by saying `RESET'. When the battery starts to fail your Dialtalk will say `LOW BATTERY' before switching off. This is to warn you that you must soon replace the battery. If you ignore this message the unit will eventually stop working. Even though the battery will by then be too flat to power the DIALTALK it will still have sufficient energy to maintain the memories for some time. We strongly recommend however that discharged batteries are replaced as soon as possible to avoid the possibility of damage due to leakage. OPERATION The DIALTALK has been designed to be very straightforward to operate - it automatically switches itself on as soon as you press any key and turns itself off if no key is pressed for 15 seconds. This ensures maximum possible battery life and happens without your being aware of it. The unit should be held with the keys facing you and the seperate column of 4 keys to the right. The 12 keys in the block of 4 rows x 3 columns is laid out as a telephone keypad. The column of 4 keys on the right are the DIALTALK operating keys, which operate as follows:- TOP DIAL Key. Once a number has been entered, either on the keypad or re-called from one of the 10 memories, the speaker grill on the back of the DIALTALK case is held against, or close to, the mouthpiece of the telephone. Pressing this key causes the DIALTALK to send the tones to the telephone to diall the number. Once the DIALTALK has finished sending the tones place the telephone earpiece to your ear and you will hear the phone ringing. It is possible to use the device in just this way without reading these instructions any further if you wish. If you would like to use the extra features provided then please read on! SECOND SPEAK Key. During entry of a number each digit is spoken is its key is pressed. The SPEAK key causes the whole number to be spoken. This key is used to check numbers while they are being entered on the keypad or after they have been re-called from a memory. THIRD DELETE Key. During entry of a number on the keypad, if you make a mistake, press this key to delete the last digit. Each time you press this key it steps back 1 digit and deletes it. BOTTOM FUNCTION Key. Pressing this key sounds a short `BEEP'. You then have the following choices:- 1. Press any number key on the phone pad from 0 to 9. This will re-call the number stored in that memory and make it ready for immediate use just as if you had typed it in at the keypad. 2. Press the `#' key on the keypad (bottom right), followed by any number key on the phone pad from 0 to 9. This will store whatever number you have entered on the keypad into that memory. 3. Press the `*' key on the keypad (bottom left). This will again sound a short `BEEP' to advise you that you are now about to change one of the personal preference settings. This facility is provided to enable you to tailor the DIALTALK's speech to your personal preference or to insert pauses into your numbers - sometimes necessary if you need to obtain an outside line from an exchange for instance. These additional commands are obtained by pressing FUNCTION - * - then:- 1 selects speech volume 1 2 selects speech volume 2 3 selects speech volume 3 4 selects dialling volume 1 7 selects dialling volume 2 5 selects use `O' - speaks the number as `OH' 8 selects use `ZERO' - speaks the number as `ZERO' 6 selects cancel double - speaks all digits seperately 9 selects use double - speaks pairs of digits as `DOUBLE-' 0 selects pause - inserts a pause after the last digit You cannot damage the DIALTALK whatever combination of keys you press, so we recommend that you experiment freely with it to familiarise yourself with the functions. If the above sounds as though it may get a little complicated please don't be concerned - the DIALTALK gives you spoken assistance as you use it and remember that it is not necessary to use any of the memories or extra features in order to use the device. It can be used perfectly well as a normal phone keypad to enter telephone numbers, then held against, or close to, the mouthpiece of a telephone and made to call the number by just pressing the DIAL button. The following suggestions may be helpful: If the DIALTALK does not appear to be dialling properly, first check that the number has been entered correctly, then try positioning the DIALTALK speaker a little closer to or further away from the mouthpiece or even on the back of the telephone, opposite the mouthpiece. If this still doesn't work try selecting the other dialling volume as above. (FUNCTION - * - 7). If you need to store numbers longer than the 15 digit maximum per memory, use 2 or more memories and dial them by recalling the first, pressing DIAL, recall the second, press DIAL etc i.e. you can string memories together - the DIALTALK's speech will not interfere with the dialling process. Store your bank's phone number in one memory and your PIN in another if you use tone dialled bank services. Some speciallised B.T. services require the `#' or `*' keys to be pressed in the middle of a number. These keys can be entered in the same way as digits in the telephone number. During speech the DIALTALK will say `HASH' or `STAR' and will transmit the appropriate tones when dialling. Your DIALTALK will not work with B.T. public payphones unless you are connected to a service. i.e. to use B.T. Chargecard store your account No in 1 memory and the number you want to call in another. Dial 144 using the telephone keys then, when requested, send your account No using your Dialtalk then, again when requested, send the call number. In order to use a telephone's MERCURY facility you should press the telephone's MERCURY button before using your DIALTALK to call the number.
